Thea’s Birthday!

Thea turned eight last Friday, which officially makes her a senior dog. She’s rocking quite the sugar face these days, and honestly, the gray looks good on her.But she certainly doesn’t act her age.

She still gets the zoomies regularly, greets me at the door with a toy, and has just as many opinions as she did when she was younger. She’s still very much a puppy at heart, even if her joints crack when she stretches and she sometimes moves a little slower.

Years ago, my vet said something that stuck with me. Dogs don’t realize when they’re sick or getting old, and they don’t worry about the future. They live in the now and are happy doing what they’re able to do.I think about that a lot. I spend plenty of time worrying about what’s next, or wishing I could do things the way I used to. Thea doesn’t. If she can’t jump as high, she finds another way up. If she’s a little stiff, she stretches and gets on with her day.

There’s a lesson in that for all of us. So this year, I’m taking a page from Thea’s book. Fewer worries about what’s next, more joy in what’s right in front of me. And maybe a few zoomies of my own.

Check out this photo of Thea, looking very unimpressed after I told her she’s now considered geriatric. Now it’s your turn. Send me a photo of your pet, whether they’re a puppy, a senior, or somewhere in between.
